Why does it take so long for the general public to understand simple facts?

So far as science is concerned, there is no difference between a fetus and a human being. Life is a continuum, it's not discrete. The definition of human laws go by is not the same as the definition science makes. This doesn't make science pro-life, it just doesn't make it pro-choice. A fetus's heart starts beating at the 3rd week.
